By mid-September, motorists driving through Huntley will have another road project to contend with that involves the closure of the railroad crossing at Kreutzer Road.

Meanwhile, authorities from the Illinois Department of Transportation hope to finish most of the $23.6 million lane widening project on Route 47 this year, but say additional work will need to done in the spring, no matter what.

Officials at Union Pacific Railroad will close the rough crossing on Kreutzer Road, about a mile east of Route 47, for five days while they smoothen it out.

A 16-year-old North Chicago youth died and a 17-year-old, also from North Chicago, was seriously injured in a high-speed accident early Wednesday morning in north suburban Waukegan.

Justin Ortega, 16, of the 2400 block of Kennedy, North Chicago, was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle authorities believe he was driving left the roadway and smashed into a tree near 742 Fulton Avenue about 2:45 a.m.

“It was a real horrendous accident where the vehicle was cut in two," said Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey. He said Ortega was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. and the autopsy revealed that he died of quick deceleration from a high speed situation causing a lot of internal injuries.

When police arrived they found the vehicle's impact with the tree caused it to split in half. The rear half of the vehicle came to rest against the front of a house and the front half of the vehicle came to rest upside down in the neighbor's yard.

It took nearly 30 years for Robert Bostic to be tried for the shooting death of a man at a motorcycle clubhouse in Lake County. It took a jury only three hours Thursday to find him guilty.

Bostic, now 71, sat stoically as his conviction was announced, mere weeks after it appeared the case might fall apart after prosecutors said several witnesses changed their stories. In the end, none of the fellow Wheelmen club members who took the stand — all present when Carlton Richmond was killed in Round Lake Beach in 1982 — implicated Bostic during the four-day trial. But that apparently didn't convince jurors that the gunman wasn't Bostic or that the shooting was an accident, as his attorneys suggested.

"We are really glad he was found guilty because it has been 29 years," Richmond's widow, Victoria Hargis, said after the verdict. "But I wish (Bostic's family) didn't have to go through it." Bostic's son slammed his head against a wall in the courtroom and other relatives cried audibly when the guilty verdict was announced.

CRYSTAL LAKE – A Union man died after an accident Wednesday morning on an icy road just over the border in Wisconsin. Jeffery S. Janet, 48, of Union was taken to Mercy Harvard Hospital, but later died from his injuries, according to a news release from the Walworth County Sheriff's Office and McHenry County deputy coroner Rob Locke. Janet was ejected from his 2008 Ford F-150 truck when it overturned and rolled over at about 9:30 a.m.

He had been driving east on Stateline Road a half-mile east of Sharon, Wis., police said.

The truck crossed into the westbound lane, entered a ditch and rolled over. The road was snow-packed and icy, police said. First responders found him on the north side of Stateline Road in a cornfield and began life-saving efforts. Janet was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
