WOODSTOCK - Charges against a woman accused in a hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a Woodstock man have been upgraded, according to the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office.

Joseph A. Woodell died Saturday at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He was 26.

Woodell was injured May 20 when he jumped onto the hood of a car after what authorities described as a drug deal that had gone awry.

Police said John C. Kurchina, 22, of Woodstock, had arranged to buy drugs at Woodell's home on Lawndale Ave. in Woodstock. Kurchina allegedly took an undisclosed amount of marijuana and fled without paying. Kurchina jumped into a nearby car driven by Hanna M. Schacht, 21, of Woodstock, and as she sped off, Woodell jumped on the car's hood in an attempt to stop the pair, police said.

He was thrown to the pavement and suffered a head injury. He was flown to the Libertyville hospital in critical condition.

Schacht was originally charged with theft and failure to report an accident involving a personal injury. The failure to report charge has since been upgraded to a Class 1 felony from a Class 2 felony. If convicted, Schacht faces up to 15 years in prison.

Kurchina was charged with theft. That charge remains the same.
